Lot Essay

Lamb met Helen Maitland in 1908 in Paris where she was studying music. They had a brief affair, but by 1911 she moved in with and later married Lamb's friend, the mosaic artist, Boris Anrep (1883-1869). In 1925 she met Roger Fry at a party in Vanessa Bell's studio and lived with him until he died in 1934. After his death she generously supported the artists of the Euston Road School in the late 1930s.

This pencil drawing was used as a study for his family portrait of the Anrep family (Exhibition catalogue; Henry Lamb 1883-1960, Manchester, 1984, nos. 49 and 50).
