Lot Essay

Formerly attributed, on the basis of its signature, to Francisco de Vargas, Péréz Sánchez noted that nothing whatsoever was known about the artist and no other work by him existed (op.cit.). Scientific analysis has subsequently cast serious doubt over the picture's date of origin.
