Lot Essay

Dr. Jennifer Montagu pointed out at the time of the 1988 sale that this appears to be half of the drawing for a thesis print connected with the Accademia degli Arisofi, a Jesuit academy attached to the Collegio de Brera, Rome. This had the emblem of a well with a wheel to which buckets were attached, and the motto UNA OMNES. The cartouche held by a putto top right would probably have been for the arms of the dedicatee.
