The double-sided sketch is related to a finished painting by West, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1802 as 'The Paddington passage boats returning from Uxbridge in the evening' and now in the Detroit Institute of Arts (H. von Erffa and A. Staley, The Paintings of Benjamin West, New Haven and London, 1986, no. 466).
