After her move to France in the late 1960s, Frink began to create several heads with goggles. The sculptures form an evocation of the 'worst nightmares of modern politics and the contemporary police state; they were suggested by newspaper photographs of the sinister Algerian General Oufkir who, in public, invariably wore dark glasses' (see E. Lucie-Smith, Elisabeth Frink, London, 1994, p. 67).
