The Mercator model was launched in 1994 to honor the memory of the famous cartographer and humanist Gerardus Mercator on the 400th anniversary of his death. The various dials represent the Americas or Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia as drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1587.
