Lot Essay

De Maistre was baptised into the Catholic Church while living in London in 1949. His biographer, Heather Johnson, has speculated that the devastating experiences of the Second World War may have led to the artist's conversion and to his exploration of religious themes in his art. De Maistre's religious works were received with considerable interest, due to his synthesis of a modernist style with traditional, religious subject matter.
