Lot Essay

The marquetry scheme on the present commode is a variation of the design made by Jean Francois Oeben for a Meuble à transformation stamped Leleu illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le mobilier Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 613. Another commode by Oeben using the same combination of circle and cube parquetry panels is illustrated in Op cit., p. 618.
