Mercié executed his composition of David with the head of Goliath in plaster at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1869-1870. In the Paris Salon of 1872 it won him a first class medal. Life-size bronze casts are in Musée d'Orsay in Paris, Musée Toulouse and at the University of Copenhagen. Barbedienne edited this model in six sizes of which the present lot is one.
