Lot Essay

Osbert Lancaster worked as a cartoonist, painter and author, producing designs and costumes for theatre, opera and ballet. These included La Fille mal garde for The Royal Ballet, L'italiana in Algeri and Falstaff for Glyndebourne and Hotel Paradiso, Zulrika, and Candide for the theatre. The present work was part of Lancaster's set design for All's Well That Ends Well which was performed at the Old Vic in 1953. A volume of the play was published in 1963 with illustrations and an introduction by Lancaster.
