This tobacco box is a fine example of the boxes designed to be used as a perpetual calendar and as a tool to register a ship's speed in seamiles. The inscription Reght Door Zee refers to one of the earliest Amsterdam nautical schools "Het schip regt door zee", owned by Pieter Holm who founded it in 1737 and who sold to his students charts and instruments like this box.
