Lot Essay

A bench end in Broomfield, Somerset, with a comparable motif of winding leaves around the border, is illustrated in Arthur Gardner, Minor English Wood Sculpture, London, 1958 (Cat. No. 40). Gardner attributes this bench end to Simon Werner. According to P.Poyntz Wright, The Rural Benchends of Somerset the motif of leaves winding around the staff was Werner's 'trademark'.
