Ecton Hall was built by Ambrose Isted in 1756. Charles William Hamilton Sotheby (d. 1887) inherited the estate in 1881. The Sotheby family were a scholarly family of collectors, although not apparently linked to the auctioneers. The estate was sold in 1954 after the death of Major-General Frederick Edward Sotheby.
