Lot Essay

The Coat-of-Arms with an uncarved central field was presumably intended to be painted with the Royal Arms. A similar heraldic panel carved in boxwood, in the Ashmolean Museum, is attributed to the carver Robert Chicheley (fl.1720-30). See Nicholas Penny, Catalogue of European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1992, Vol. 3., no. 459.
