These tall chairs have triumphally arched and tablet-framed backs in a fashion favoured for caned chairs in the Dutch manner. Related chairs, displaying rich upholstery were executed in the Louis Quatorze Roman fashion by leading craftsmen such as Thomas Roberts and Philip Guibert; and the type were popularised by the engraved Oeuvres of Daniel Marot (d.1752), such as this illustrated in his Second Livre d'Appartements, 1703. Guibert supplied related furnishings for Kiveton, Yorkshire, which was built from 1697 by Sir Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds (d.1712), and has been credited with the manufacture of the Duke's suite of similarly backed chairs (see P. Macquoid, The Age of Walnut, London, 1905 p.114; and a pair sold Sotheby's London, 30 November 2001, lot 48). Related backs also featured on a set of chairs formerly at Tyninghame, Scotland (sold Sotheby's sale at Tyninghame, 28th September 1987, lot 150).
