The present figure is after the much celebrated original unearthed in Rome between 1674 and 1676 during the opening of the new road adjoining the Chiesa Nuova. Formerly in the collections of the Queen of Sweden and then the Odescalchi family it was purchased by Philip V of Spain in 1724 and kept in the country palace of San Ildefonso until 1839 when it was taken to the Prado. It is thought to be a 2nd century A.D. Roman copy of a bronze original of the 3rd Century B.C.
