Lot Essay

Walter Crane designed seven nursery wallpapers for Metford Warner, the proprietor of Jeffrey and Company. The two had been introduced by Bruce J. Talbert, the Scottish architect designer who had been employed by Warner in the late 1860s along with William Burges, E. W. Godwin, Charles Eastlake and Owen Jones. The nursery wallpapers were machine printed and literary based in subject matter. Crane was fascinated by manufacturing techniques, the appropriateness of the design for use on a wall and how it would repeat.
