Lot Essay

The stern of the threemaster in the foreground is decorated with the coat of arms of the city of Dordrecht. The ship might therefore be identified as the Dordrecht built in 1652 by the Chamber of Delft of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie. Its maiden voyage leaving Goeree, Zeeland for Batavia with 256 sailors boarded took place on the 10th of May 1653 (Dutch-Asiatic Shipping in the 17th and 18th Centuries, 1979, II, 0773.1). Several voyages followed before the Dordrecht was laid up and sold at Batavia on the 12th of May 1681.
