A CONSOLE TABLE, BEFORE 1920
In brownish orange lacquer, the rectangular top in muted silver grey lacquer, with a brownish orange lacquered retractable shelf at each end, supported by four legs, the curved surfaces lacquered in silver, with a capital ornamented with stylised lotus and with silver grey lacquer waves
This precious console is consistent both in its technique and its decorative detail with Miss Gray's earliest exercises in lacquer and most likely dates from before 1920. The silvery grey lacquer is closely comparable with that of the enfilade in the present collection (lot 243), and the lotus theme calls to mind her panel Le Magicien de la Nuit, exhibited in 1913, and the lotus table for Doucet that he was to site in his cabinet d'Orient
