A CARVED OVAL CORAL CAMEO BUST OF DIOGENES
19TH CENTURY
Wreathed, drapery at his shoulder, with dog and scroll, facing three quarters to the left; in an oval gold mount applied to a nephrite ground within an associated gilt-bronze frame with moulded border edged with leafy scrolls
The present cameo portrait can be identified as the Cynic philosopher, Diogenes of Sinope (412-323 BC). Because of his rejection of conventional attitudes as to what might be done in public, Diogenes was called 'Dog' in Greek, and this was taken up as the name of his sect, the Cynics.
