A CARVED TURQUOISE CAMEO HEAD OF ANTINOUS
19TH CENTURY
His head garlanded with flowers, a ribbon falling across his shoulder, facing in profile to the left; in a gilt-metal oval mount applied to an agate ground, within an associated silver-gilt frame decorated with scrolls and acanthus leaves surmounted by the mask of a winged putto, on curvilinear wooden base

The head derives from the marble relief excavated at Hadrian's villa, now in the Villa Albani, Rome (F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, London and New Haven, 1981, pp. 145-6, fig. 75).
