Son casque surmonté d'une crête illustrant en relief le combat entre un Lapithe et un centaure, un chien de chasse au-dessous et un aigle sur la visière, portant un baudrier sur l'épaule gauche et une cape maintenue par une fibule sur l'épaule droite, présenté de profil vers la gauche; dans une monture étroite et ovale en métal doré appliquée sur un fond octogonal en jaspe rouge, enchâssé dans un cadre octogonal d'époque postérieure en ébène et bronze doré, bordé de feuilles d'acanthe et surmonté d'un masque de putto ailé

19TH CENTURY
His crested helmet embossed with the fight between a Lapith and a centaur, a hound below and an eagle over the visor, wearing baldric over his left shoulder and cloak brooched on the right, facing in profile to the left; in a narrow oval gilt-metal mount applied to a red jasper octagonal ground within a later ormolu-mounted octagonal ebony frame with acanthus borders surmounted by a mask of a winged putto

The head derives from the marble groups in Rome and Florence, replicas of a 3rd century BC Greek original, of Ajax or Menelaus carrying the body of Patroclus (see F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique - the Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, London and New Haven, 1981, pp. 191-6, no. 72.
