A CARVED OVAL LAPIS LAZULI CAMEO HEAD OF THE EMPEROR MARCUS AURELIUS
16TH OR 17TH CENTURY
Bearded, with short curly hair facing to the right in profile; in an oval gold mount applied to a rock crystal ground within an associated gilt-bronze frame decorated in relief with scrolls, with three loops for attachment

A series of lapis lazuli cameo heads of eleven Roman Emperors, worn in a chain for the hat or neck, found in the wreck of the Girona off the coast of Northern Ireland in 1588 after the destruction of the Spanish Armada, are in the Ulster Museum, Belfast, and another series was mounted on the rim of a rock crystal dish in the treasure of the Dauphin at the Prado, Madrid. Une série de camées en lapis-lazuli représentant les têtes de onze empereurs romains, montée en chaîne pour le chapeau ou le cou, trouvée dans les ruines de la Girona au large des côtes de l'Irlande du nord en 1588 après la destruction de l'Invincible Armada, est conservée à l'Ulster Museum à Belfast; une autre série ayant été montée sur le bord d'un plat en cristal de roche appartenant au trésor du Dauphin est désormais conservée au musée du Prado à Madrid.
