A PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME ENAMEL EWER DEPICTING MOSES DRAWING WATER FROM A STONE
ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN COURT, SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY
The broad spout decorated with gilt foliate scrolls and acanthus leaf decoration, the upper body decorated with a bacchic procession, the lower body with Moses and attendant figures with animals, above a circular spreading foot decorated with acanthus leaves, garlands and masks; restorations

Although unsigned, this ewer can be attributed to Jean Court on the basis of its similarity to another ewer, monogrammed 'IC' in this collection (lot 536), as well as two signed tazze in the Frick Collection, New York (see Verdier, loc. cit.). The composition is derived from an engraving in the Quadrins historiques de la Bible, first published in Lyons in 1553.

Bien que non signée, cette aiguière peut être attribuée à Jean Court sur la base des similarités avec une autre aiguière monogramée 'IC' et qui figure dans la collection présente (lot 536), ainsi qu'avec deux tazze signées et désormais conservés à la Frick Collection, à New York (voir Verdier, loc. cit.). Cette composition s'inspire d'une gravure illustrée dans les Quadrins historiques de la Bible, ouvrage qui fut publié la première fois à Lyon en 1553.
