A PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES OF BACCHUS AND A FAUN
AFTER ADRIAN DE VRIES (1556-1626) AND WILLEM DANIELSZ. VAN TETRODE (DIED BEFORE 1588), PROBABLY GERMAN, 17TH CENTURY
Each depicted nude and standing, the faun looking back over his left shoulder, Bacchus holding a bunch of grapes aloft in his left hand; each on a later rectangular panelled marble pedestal; dark brown patina with greenish brown high points; very minor damages

The present figures are an interesting study in the history of bronze casting. Here, the founder has drawn together two models - of a bacchic faun and Bacchus himself - created by different artists, and cast them to create a new artistic pairing. The Faun is a composition by Adriaen de Vries, known in at least three other versions in Baltimore, Toronto and Dresden (for a note on the model see de Vries, loc. cit.). However, the Bacchus is a model attributed to the Dutch artist Willem Danielsz. van Tetrode. It is known in a beautifully cast example in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (see Renaissance and Baroque Bronzes, loc. cit.), and another example in Hamburg.

Les figures que nous présentons ici constituent un cas d'étude intéressant dans l'histoire de la fonte des bronzes. Le fondeur a ici réuni deux modèles - l'un d'un faune et l'autre de Bacchus - créés par des artistes différents et les a moulés en une paire, afin de créer une nouvelle composition artistique. Le faune est une création d'Adriaen de Vries (1556-1626), que l'on retrouve dans au moins trois autres versions à Baltimore, Toronto et à Dresde (pour une discussion sur ce modèle, voir de Vries, loc. cit.). Le modèle de Bacchus, quant-à lui est attribué au sculpteur hollandais Willem Danielsz. van Tetrode (mort avant 1588): il en existe un exemple remarquable au Fitzwilliam Museum, à Cambridge (voir Renaissance and Baroque Bronzes, loc. cit.), ainsi qu'un autre à Hambourg.
