A ROMAN MARBLE TORSO OF MERCURY
CIRCA 1ST - 2ND CENTURY A.D.
Standing in contrapposto with his weight on his right leg, the left slightly advanced, with both arms lowered, the right pulled back, depicted nude but for a chlamys pinned at his right shoulder, falling in U-shaped folds in the front and gathered in back at the left shoulder
This version of Mercury is a Roman interpretation of a work by Polykleitos. It is likely that he once carried a small child, perhaps the infant Dionysus, in his right hand. For the type compare the marble figure in the Boboli Gardens, Florence, no. 396 in Siebert "Hermes," in LIMC, vol. V.
