Lot Essay

The Leerdam was built in 1881 for the Nederlandsche Stoomboot-Maatschappij in Rotterdam. In the following year she was acquired by an independent shipping company who let her to the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaartmaatschappij (later the Holland-Amerika Lijn) untill they finally purchased her in 1889. In that same year the Leerdam sank in the Channel after a collision with an English vessel.
