Lot Essay

See J. G. Phillips, China Trade Porcelain, Cambridge, 1956, pp. 157-8, fig. 51, where he illustrates the Marieberg ceramic prototype for this porcelain model, and a Chinese equivalent, which is very close to the present lot in shape. The Swedish jardinère was made between 1758-1766, at the factory near Stockholm. It is one of a number of Marieberg faience shapes that reappear closely imitated in Chinese export porcelain, clearly intended initially for the Swedish market.
