Lot Essay

This pattern is a combination of details from three studies of amateur botanist Maria Sibylla Merian's (1647-1717) third Raupenbuch (caterpillar book). Its border relates closely to Pronk designs. See Antiques magazine, August 2000, for Charlotte Jacob-Hanson on Merian.
