Another example of this model and its companion, a Dutchman riding a mythical beast, are illustrated by Godden (Oriental Export Market Porcelain, London, 1979, pp. 270-1, no. 198) where he notes that two Blanc de Chine figures of "'men on horses' and 'men on monsters' at 2s and 2s 6d'" are mentioned in the English East India Company's early 18th century sales records. Also compare Sotheby's, New York, 24 January 1990, lot 326 and the example in the Maret-Gould Collection illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Chinese Trade Porcelain, p. 32.
