Lot Essay

Compare with a very similar single cow in the Hodroff collection and earlier the Mottahedeh collection (lot 173 sale 2261), illustrated by Fuchs and Howard, Made in China, p. 178 (and lot 173, sale 2261). The authors note that Dutch delft models were sent out to China to be copied, and quote a 1746 request of the Dutch East India Co. for "Cows,...white grounds, some with brown, some with blue spots, according to sample."
