Very likely with scenes from The Romance of the Western Chamber, a well-known tale with origins as early as the 9th century in which a talented but poor scholar and a beautiful maiden are kept apart until he proves his worth through various adventures and scholarly achievement. A very similar dish, with varying scenes, from the Hodroff collection was sold Christie's, New York, 23 Janury 2008, lot 284.
