Decorated as a flower-head with three rows of petals, each petal showing a detailed figure scene, undoubtedly taken from a contemporary romance, including courting couples, admonishing mothers and battling horsemen, on the reverse a green-ground floral border and an underglaze blue artemesia leaf mark

Lot Essay

Very likely with scenes from The Romance of the Western Chamber, a well-known tale with origins as early as the 9th century in which a talented but poor scholar and a beautiful maiden are kept apart until he proves his worth through various adventures and scholarly achievement. A very similar dish, with varying scenes, from the Hodroff collection was sold Christie's, New York, 23 Janury 2008, lot 284.
