Lot Essay

A very similar pair of these mythical lion/deer/dragon beasts was in the collection of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, sold Sotheby's, New York, 5 May 1984, lot 75; and another sold Sotheby's, Monaco, 23 June 1985, lot 649, and later Sotheby's, New York, 23 January 1992, lot 394, from the Estate of Wendell Cherry.
