From a service made for Elias Morgan of Hartford, Connecticut (ancestor of J.P. Morgan) whose brother, John, had ordered a nearly identical service (with no inscription) that returned to America on The Empress of China, making them among the very first special orders for the new direct American trade with China. See D.S. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, p. 102.
