Lot Essay
Paulding Farnham designed these sweetmeat dishes as part of a grand silver-gilt dinner service in the Italian Renaissance style for the Paris Exposition of 1900. A pair of matching jardinières sold in these Rooms, 18 January 2007, lot 200. Other pieces of the service that sold in these Rooms include: a set of four candlesticks and a matching candelabrum on 18 June 1998, lot 59 and 4 June 1988, lot 14 and a coffee service on 19 May 2005, lot 23.
The service was apparently retailed shortly after the Buffalo Exposition of 1901, as it was engraved with a monogram by Tiffany's in 1902. The candelabrum and the massive centerpiece from the service are illustrated in Janet Zapata, "The Rediscovery of Paulding Farnham, Tiffany's Designer Extraordinaire," The Magazine Antiques, April 1991, pp. 724-725, plates VIII and IX. Farnham was Art Director of Tiffany's and head of both the Jewelry and Silver Departments. He designed all of the silver and jewelry exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
