Lot Essay

These embossed medallions' antique-fretted and Ionic wave-scrolled cartouches are enwreathed by Roman acanthus foliage and suspend by husks beneath heads of moors sporting Venus shells. They relate to patterns such as those invented by the Rome-trained architect James Gibbs, issued in 1731 by John Clark in Thirty Three Shields & Compartments for Monumental Inscriptions, Coats of arms etc...
