The design for this elegant sideboard relates to a sideboard table illustrated in L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800 Royston, 1995, fig. 84, supplied by Gillows to Dr. Crompton of Derby in 1787. Gillows often used this distinctive handle pattern of an oval backplate set within an oval ring, such as on a secretaire press, supplied by Gillows to James Maxwell in 1792 (S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Suffolk, 2008, Vol. II, p.65, pl. 610). Another related sideboard commissioned from Gillows in 1791 by Messrs. Calvert & Harrison displays identical fluted sunflower spandrels or 'shaded fans' (ibid., vol. I., p. 318, pl. 360).
