The case with cushion-moulded top (alterations) and flanked by brass finials to the corners, with brass-capped inset columns to all angles, with brass ringed drop handles above brass-lined arched glazed side panels, the front door with pierced and engraved silk-backed quarter frets, with moulded plinth base and raised on four brass bun feet, the 8 in. wide brass dial with mask and foliate spandrels to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers and diamond half quarter hour markers, signed 'Claudius Du Chesne', the matted centre with engraved borders to the false pendulum aperture and date square, raised silvered collets to the winding holes, the arch with foliate scroll engraving and with strike/silent and regulation rings flanking a larger age-of-moon ring, its matted centre with penny moon aperture, blued steel hands, the movement secured to the case with engraved brackets, with five ringed pillars, twin line fusees, verge escapement with pendulum regulation bar across the top of the back plate, hour strike on bell and pull quarter repeat on six bells, the back plate engraved centrally with a figure of a sword-bearing angel holding a banner inscribed 'PAX', flanked by eagles and within a chevron-engraved border; pendulum with bob engraved to both sides, winding key, case key

Lot Essay

This clock may be compared with a fine red-lacquered clock by Du Chesne, sold anonymously, Christie's London, 1 July 2005, lot 141. That clock also has an age of moon ring centred by a penny moonphase, a similarly-shaped false pendulum aperture and raised collets to the winding holes. The present clock was probably originally a little taller, with a fretwork section below the cushion-moulded top; this feature may be seen on the lacquered clock and on another example by Du Chesne, sold anonymously, Christie's London, 5 July 2006, lot 148.
