Lot Essay

Designs for such 'Grecian' lion-headed armchairs were published by George Smith in his Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, pl. 56. A related set of four large mahogany caned bergeres, without leonine enrichment, were supplied in 1814 for George Home's Library at Paxton House, Berwickshire, by William Trotter (d. 1833), of Princes Street, Edinburgh, at a cost of £7.7.0 each. Three of the set of four, with a modern copy, were sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 27 November 2003, lot 140 (£45,410).
