Lot Essay

The present works are illustrations to accompany a poem by D'Oyly entitled 'Tom Raw, the Griffin: a burlesque poem, in twelve cantos' (1828). The work describes the adventures of a cadet in the East India company, charting his journey from England to India where he obtains a staff situation. The poem is accompanied by twenty-five engravings, and although the present watercolours were not engraved they illustrate scenes from the first canto of the poem.
