The gardens at Studley Park were created by John Aislabie and his son William. The pagoda was built between 1744-47 and was set in an elevated poisition above the Maccashaw ravine with views of the surrounding landscape. The pagoda is an early example of Chinoiserie and the design may have been derived from a collection of oriental landscape drawings owned by Lord Burlington, a friend of the Aislabies.
