Lot Essay

The 1972 sale included a group of black chalk studies of trees which may have been part of a sketchbook or album that Fragonard used to make sketches in situ. A related landscape study is in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (P. Bjurström, French Drawings, Eighteenth Century, Stockholm, 1982, no. 953).
We are grateful to Eunice Williams for her assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
