Lot Essay

Prepatory for Landelle's 1851 painting, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Laval (Charles Landelle (1821-1908): Exposition Rétrospective, exhib. cat., Laval, Musée Vieux-Château et Chapelle Saint-Julien, 1987, no. 18). A second painting with the same title formed a pendant. There are some changes between the drawing and the painting, notably in the expressions and positions of the faces of the second and third figures from the right.
