Related to the artist's painting Christ leaving the Praetorium, one of a series of Biblical paintings he was under contract to make for the London dealers Fairless and Beeforth. It appears to be related to the figures of the Virgin supported by two women in the lower right quadrant of the painting. The painting, now at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, was first exhibited at the Doré Gallery on Bond Street in 1872.
