Lot Essay

Alastair Laing, who has seen photographs of the present painting, places it in the orbit of Jean-François de Troy. However, other scholars have suggested that it might be closer in style to the work of the young Boucher. While a secure attribution may remain elusive, all agree that it is a charming and skilfully painted composition, most likely a preparatory study for a larger decorative work.
