An encyclopedic compilation of information, statistics and general information about the historical institution of slavery, its origin, use in various cultures, the evils of the plantation system, and the corruption of "the slave democracy." Also reviewed are the Ordinance of 1787, the Missouri Compromise, the "Kansas outrages," the differing state laws respecting slavery and the 1860 party platforms. The manual, though vehemently anti-slavery and anti-Democrat, concludes with a brief chapter describing Republican candidates Lincoln and Hamlin. His "masterly address" at Cooper Union is praised for "close reasoning," and its striking originality. Not in Monaghan.
