LINCOLN, Abraham. Partly printed document signed ("Abraham Lincoln"), as President, Washington, D. C., 3 June 1864. 1 page, 4to, the names of the pardon recipients accomplished in a clerical hand.
"I HEREBY ORDER AND DIRECT THE SECRETARY OF STATE to affix the Seal of the United States to a warrant for the conditional pardon of James M. Withers, Marquis M. Withers and John N. Carter." As the battles raged in Cold Harbor, Virginia between Grant and Lee that fateful first week of June 1864--and as Lincoln struggled to fight off challenges to his own renomination as President--he grants a conditional pardon to three men: James M. Withers, Marquis M. Withers and John N. Carter.
