Lot Essay

This unusual cover exhibits decoration in a style more common to the open robes of the late 18th century than to domestic furnishings. In addition, evidence of old seam lines and hem creases points to a previous life as a very elegant gown.

Another example is held by the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York.
