The front engraved with a contemporary baroque coat-of-arms, the back later engraved with another, the cover engraved with crest, the inside rim of cover engraved with later presentation inscription

The arms on the front are those of Poulter with another in pretence. To the other side are the quartered arms of Hay-Drummond. The marshalling dates from 1739 when the Hon. Robert Hay, Archbishop of York, father of the 9th Earl of Kinnoull, inherited the Cromlix estate, Perthsire, under the terms of the entail of his great-grandfather William Drummond, Viscount Strathallan. The engraved crest on the cover is that of Hay of Scotland.
