John Drummond (1650-1715), 1st Earl of Melfort and a supporter of James II and VII, fled to France in December 1688 in the wake of the Glorious Revolution. The family used the title 'Duc de Melfort' in exile. His son John served as Major-General in the Jacobite army of 1715, and several further descendents served in the French military.
